Richard Neutra

With an interruption for military service, Richard Neutra (1892–1970) studied from 1910 to 1918 at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna under Karl Mayreder and Max Fabiani, and also at the Bauschule of Adolf Loos. There followed a year in Switzerland, after which he was active in Germany (from 1920) for Erich Mendelsohn, among others. Neutra emigrated to the USA in 1923, where he worked for Hollarbird & Roche, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Rudolph Schindler. He set up his own atelier in 1926, and later worked in partnership with various other architects. He also taught at the Los Angeles Academy of Modern Art (1928–29). On his many lecture tours and in his publications, Neutra dealt particularly with the role of architecture in human life.
