Hermann Neubacher (1893–1960) was general director of the GESIBA (Public Utility Settlement and Building Material Corporation) from 1920, and became president of the Austrian Werkbund in 1928. Together with László Gábor and Josef Frank, he co-directed the Werkbund Exhibition. As early as 1933, he joined the NSDAP, going on to serve as illegal party leader and later mayor of Vienna in 1938–40, after which he was stationed in the Balkans. In 1951, he was sentenced to twenty years’ imprisonment in Yugoslavia, but was released the year after due to ill health. Neubacher subsequently became advisor and commissioner to the city of Addis Abeba, then advisor to Austrian Airlines, and finally a board member at the Wienerberg brickworks.
