Josef Wenzel

Josef Wenzel (1902–64) studied in Vienna at the Akademie der bildenden Künste (1922–26) under Peter Behrens and Clemens Holzmeister, as well at the Technische Hochschule (1922–23 and 1930). Whilst working as head architect in the atelier of Holzmeister in 1926–35, Wenzel also took on projects of his own. After a short spell as an independent architect and following the Anschluss, he worked for a number of architects’ offices in Germany, and was involved in major projects for estate housing and industrial buildings. In 1948–52, he was active in the atelier of Max Fellerer and Eugen Wörle, after which he returned to self-employment. His limited architectural oeuvre is characterised by a pronounced simplicity of form.
