Rudolf Lothar Baumfeld

Rudolf Lothar Baumfeld (1903–88) was educated in Vienna at the Technische Hochschule (1922) and Akademie der bildenden Künste (1929–31) under Clemens Holzmeister. Whilst working as an adviser to the city on its social housing programme (1931–33), he went into partnership with Norbert Schlesinger (1932–37). He emigrated to Czechoslovakia in 1938 and then on to Italy in 1940, where he was arrested and interned, but subsequently escaped; he left for the USA in the same year. There he worked in Victor Gruen’s office from 1943, becoming a partner in 1949–50 and then director of ‘Victor Gruen Associates Subsidiary Innerspace Design’ from 1970 to 1983. Baumfeld, who designed offices and interiors for numerous businesses, was responsible for the interior of house no. 67 at the Werkbund Estate.
