Ernst Lichtblau

Ernst Lichtblau (1883–1963) studied in Vienna under Otto Wagner at the Akademie der bildenden Künste from 1902 to 1905. He worked for the Wiener Werkstätte in 1910–20, and as an independent architect and designer in 1910–39. He also became director of the Advice Bureau for Interior Design (BEST) in 1929. Lichtblau emigrated to the USA in 1939, where he taught at various institutions from 1947 to 1960, before returning to Vienna two years before his death. At the Werkbund Estate, he designed and furnished houses nos. 41–42, and was also responsible for the interiors of houses nos. 2, 22, and 63. Lichtblau was one of the few pupils of Otto Wagner who managed to free themselves from the monumental figure of their teacher and embrace contemporary modernism.
